Stuttgart, ITFS 2015

So, this year I was a jury member for the international film competition at Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film ITFS 2015!
Yes, I watched more than 40 amazing animated short films coming from all over the world, I discussed and analysed each single one with a great group of expert jurists, and, I simply loved it.

Here are some photos from my crazy week in Stuttgart:

With the international jury, from right to left:
Gilles Ciment (France), Anna Solanas (Spain), Bobby de Groot (Netherland), Mari-Liis Rebane (Estonia) and me :)

Jean-Charles Mbotti Malolo, the Grand Prix winner on stage.

All the winners together!

Happy Easter from Syria 2015

This is my Easter card this year.

Inspired from this famous photo of a 4 years old refugee girl in Atmeh camp, northern Syria.
The photo was taken almost two years ago when the kid thought that the photographer is holding a gun in his hand.

It's been a while since I worked on a poster, well this one was made quite quickly but I always enjoy working on anything that serves a good cause.

Allaho Akbar! تكبير

Takbeer تكبير

Takbeer is a word that Arabs in general and Muslims in particular say as a call for the Allah Akbar cheering.
Usually it comes as an expression of an overwhelming surprise, determination, joy or despair.
Mockingly I supposed that today in Damascus there are more than one type of Takbeer that follows the new convictions of each.

Damascus is falling, yet we're still fighting over our new labels and craving empty dreams.

"Domestic Violence"

"The sounds that we hear in this video were taken from an audio registration posted on facebook on the new year's eve of 2012-2013 in Damascus.
The sounds that we hear are actually the sounds of war."

Thyme for Aleppo

An old thyme wrap inside the box of a school table.

Illustration based On a text for Zaher Omareen.

“Crossing to the other side of the road makes me a living prey…
…I wonder: Am I a gazelle? Am I a rare bird?.."

Few lines from a text that a Syrian refugee kid wrote describing the sniper in her neighbourhood.

An illustration that I made for the book "Diary Not About Cancer"
The book is about texts written by a group of kids suffering from cancer inside their hospital in Damascus.

By Trunk Animation London

12 Nov 2010 yippee-ki-yay melon farmer

Here’s Rok Predin’s latest project, we worked with Sam at Treatment Studios to create a back projection sequence to go behind the country singer Keith Urban’s performance of his track “put you in a song” at this year’s Country Music Awards in Nashville. This had a very quick turnaround, we produced three and a half minutes of animaton in twelve days straight, there were lots of late evenings but the end of the project the studio resembled a warzone. Compositing was by Rok Predin, Luca Paulli, Rob Ward and Layla Atkinson. Artworking was by Anita Leung, Yasmeen Fanari and Ginevra Boni.

ABCDoublespeak from Yasmeen Fanari on Vimeo.

ABCDoublespeak is a reminder of the evil and grotesque nature of the words used to describe violence in our world. This new dictionary does not have a filter and unveils the reality behind these words, which are masked by a positive image within the public media. Synchronized to the popular song ‘the ABCs’, which children use to learn their alphabet, ABCDoublespeak reads between the lines and shows how innocents and facts can be distorted by warfare and armed conflict. Using traditional animation, pixilation and motion graphics, this video creates a new song, ‘Our Modern Times ABC,’ that children from war-ravaged communities sing too many times and know all too well.
Toolkit: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe AfterEffect, Dragon Stop Motion and Flash

Here's few updates from 2012:

ABCDoublespeak was a real success this year!
Yes! Apparently the idea of the film got a deeper depth after the Syrian revolution birth in March 2011.

This year ABCDoublespeak was projected in Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Belgium and Paris during the Spring of Arabic Cinema Days at Cinema La Clef.

Not to forget that it was projected late March 2011 in Damascus at the animation festival at the French Cultural Center.
